What Is Answer Engine Optimization? A Working Definition, and Where It Breaks From SEO

Published on July 31, 2026 · Last updated on July 31, 2026 · Written by

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so an AI system can extract, trust and repeat a specific answer. Where SEO competes for a ranked link, AEO competes to be the sentence a model quotes. It rewards direct answers placed under question headings, machine-readable facts, and crawler access — not keyword density or backlink volume.

A contractor asks ChatGPT which roofing company to call. A founder asks Perplexity to compare two vendors. Neither sees a ranked list of ten blue links. They see one answer, naming two or three businesses, and they act on it. If your site is not in that answer, the ranking you spent two years building did not enter the conversation.

This is not a prediction. Google shipped AI Overviews to general availability in 2024, ChatGPT Search reads the Bing index, and Perplexity answers with citations by default. The surface changed. Most sites have not.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is the discipline of making a specific claim on your page easy for a machine to find, lift and attribute. It assumes the reader may never arrive. Success is your sentence appearing inside someone else’s answer, correctly attributed, rather than a session recorded in your analytics.

The framing matters more than the acronym

The acronym is new; the underlying idea is not. Featured snippets have rewarded direct answers since 2014. What changed in 2024 and 2025 is scale and consequence: an extracted answer used to sit above ten links you could still win a click from. Now it frequently is the entire response.

That shifts the economics. A page optimised only to rank can be read by a model, summarised, and cited as a competitor’s point because the competitor phrased the claim more cleanly. Being crawlable is not the same as being quotable.

How is AEO different from SEO?

They share a foundation and diverge at the top. Both need a fast, crawlable, well-structured page — there is no version of this where technical debt helps. They differ in what they optimise toward: SEO competes for position in an ordered list, while AEO competes for extraction, which has no second place.

The three surfaces, and why they score separately

It helps to stop treating search as one thing. There are three distinct surfaces, and a business can be strong on one while invisible on another:

  • Search (SEO) — a ranked list of links. Measured by position, clicks, impressions.
  • Answer (AEO) — one extracted answer: a featured snippet, an AI Overview, an assistant’s direct reply. Measured by whether your text is the one lifted.
  • Generative (GEO) — generated prose that names some businesses and not others. Measured by whether you are recommended, merely mentioned, or absent.

DaxReach scores these three separately in its GAS Engine rather than averaging them into one number, because averaging hides the failure. A business ranking well on Google and never named by an assistant does not have a mild problem across the board; it has one specific problem, and the fix is different from more backlinks.

Why do AI engines ignore most websites?

Usually for boring, mechanical reasons rather than editorial ones. The page has no direct answer near a question, the relevant claim is buried in the fourth paragraph of a section, the crawler is blocked in robots.txt, or the site renders client-side and returns an empty shell to anything that is not a browser.

The crawlers that actually matter

The access half is the cheapest to fix and the most commonly broken. These are the user agents that matter, and blocking any of them removes you from that system’s corpus:

  • GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User — OpenAI
  • ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot — Anthropic
  • PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User — Perplexity
  • Google-Extended — Gemini and AI Overviews
  • Applebot-Extended — Apple Intelligence

Many publishers blocked these in 2023 and 2024 to keep content out of training data, which was a defensible choice. The unintended consequence was exclusion from recommendation as well. Check your own file at /robots.txt before assuming this is handled.

The second common failure is invisible: a JavaScript-rendered site returns HTTP 200 with an empty container. Nothing errors. The crawler simply reads a page with no headings, no prose and no facts, and scores it accordingly.

What does an answer engine actually reward?

Extractability, measured concretely. An answer that stands alone when quoted with no surrounding context, sits immediately under a heading phrased as the question a buyer would ask, and runs about forty to sixty words. Shorter usually lacks context; longer tends to get truncated in favour of a tighter competitor.

The measurable version

This is the part most guidance leaves vague, so here is the specific standard DaxReach holds its own pages to:

  1. Question-shaped headings. An H2 or H3 that ends in a question mark, or starts with who, what, why, how, is, does, should or which.
  2. A 40–60 word direct answer immediately beneath it, before any sub-heading.
  3. A sub-heading to cap the block, after which you can write at any length.
  4. Four facts per hundred words — figures, dates, named sources, outbound links. Models quote what they can attribute.

Point three is the one people miss. A question followed by 160 words of excellent prose scores worse than one followed by 47 words and a sub-heading, because the extractable unit is too long to lift cleanly.

Traditional SEO, AEO, and doing both

Traditional SEO agency DIY AEO The DaxReach method
Optimises for Ranking position Extractability All three surfaces, scored separately
Typical first deliverable Keyword report, backlink plan Rewritten answer blocks A measured baseline across Search, Answer and Generative
Time to first signal 3–6 months Days on an indexed site Days for structure, months for entity trust
Measures AI visibility Rarely By hand, inconsistently Prompt probes across multiple assistants, repeated
Best at Competitive head terms, link acquisition Cheap structural wins on existing pages Finding which of the three is actually failing
Weakest at Assistant recommendations Knowing what to prioritise Nothing beats a strong agency on pure link building

An honest note on that last row: a good traditional SEO agency will beat a structural-only approach on competitive commercial head terms, because links still decide those. The argument for AEO is not that ranking stopped mattering. It is that ranking stopped being sufficient.

How should you start?

Audit before writing. Run the buyer questions you care about through two or three assistants, record whether you appear, then check your robots.txt and whether your pages answer their own headings directly. Most businesses find their problem is structural and already fixable in existing content.

A sensible first month

  • Week one — establish the baseline. Which assistants name you, which name competitors, and for which questions.
  • Week two — fix access. Crawler permissions, rendering, and whether a fetch without JavaScript returns real content.
  • Week three — restructure your five highest-intent pages to the 40–60 word rule.
  • Week four — re-run the same prompts and compare. Anything that did not move gets diagnosed, not repeated.

That last step is the one that separates this from guesswork. A change that does not move the signal it claimed to fix is not a fix, and the only way to know is to measure the same thing twice.

The businesses winning here are not producing more content than everyone else. They are producing content shaped so a machine can use it, and checking whether it worked. For a fuller breakdown of how the three surfaces are scored, see the GAS Engine playbook or the glossary.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimization?+

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring a page so an AI system can extract, trust and repeat a specific answer from it. Traditional SEO competes for a position in a ranked list of links. AEO competes to be the sentence a model quotes when it answers a question directly, without the user ever clicking through to a website.

Is AEO the same thing as SEO?+

No, though they overlap heavily. Both require a crawlable, fast, well-structured page. They diverge on what wins: SEO rewards relevance and authority signals that decide ranking order, while AEO rewards extractability — a direct answer, placed where a machine can find it, phrased so it survives being quoted with no surrounding context.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?+

AEO covers extracted answers: featured snippets, Google AI Overviews, and the direct response an assistant gives. GEO, generative engine optimization, covers generated prose that names some businesses and not others. AEO is about being quoted correctly. GEO is about being named at all when someone asks who to hire.

How long does answer engine optimization take to work?+

Structural changes such as adding direct answers under question headings can be crawled within days on an already-indexed site. Being named in generative answers takes longer, because models weigh entity signals that accumulate over months — consistent profiles, citations from sources the model already trusts, and repeated corroboration across independent pages.

Does schema markup make AI engines cite you?+

Not on its own. Schema helps a machine parse what a page asserts, and FAQ and Organization markup are worth having. But no major answer engine has stated that structured data determines citation. Treating schema as the unlock is the most common wasted effort in this field; the answer text itself matters more.

How do I know if AI engines currently mention my business?+

Ask them directly, using the phrasing a buyer would use rather than your brand name. Run prompts like who are the best contractors in my city across several assistants, repeat each a few times because responses vary between runs, and record whether you were recommended, merely mentioned, or absent entirely.

Do I need to allow AI crawlers in robots.txt?+

Yes, if you want to be cited. Blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended or OAI-SearchBot removes you from the corpus those systems read. Many sites blocked these crawlers in 2023 and 2024 to protect content from training, then discovered the same rules also excluded them from being recommended.

How long should an answer be for an AI to quote it?+

Roughly forty to sixty words. Shorter tends to lack enough context to stand alone when lifted; longer tends to get truncated or skipped in favour of a competitor's tighter version. Place that answer immediately under a heading phrased as the question a buyer would actually type or say.

Is answer engine optimization worth it for a small business?+

It is usually cheaper than the equivalent SEO work, because the wins are structural rather than competitive. Rewriting existing pages so their answers are extractable does not require outranking anyone. The question is whether your buyers ask assistants for recommendations, which in most service categories is increasingly yes.

What does answer engine optimization cost?+

It varies with how much existing content needs restructuring versus writing from scratch. Most of the initial work is editing pages you already have rather than producing new ones. DaxReach publishes its pricing openly rather than quoting per project; see the pricing page for current figures.
